Cambridge Housing Authority

Contact: Margaret Donnelly Moran email icon Office Phone icon 617-520-6251

Organization Type: Housing Authority

Potential Site: Cambridge, MA

Description: Recapitalization and substantial rehabilitation of an existing 4-story, 37 unit congregate federal public housing development located on a 0.62 acre site in The Port neighborhood of Cambridge. The property has retained much of its original gracious character and proportion from its prior use as a convent while providing much needed permanent housing to a vulnerable population since its conversion to public housing in 1975. While the structure of the building is sound, interior finishes, furnishings and systems are in need of significant rehabilitation. There are also potential opportunities to expand the number of units (congregate, elderly, family or some combination) either within the existing building, via an addition or in a new structure. The property abuts the Norfolk Street Historic District, and could potentially qualify for Historic Tax Credits.

Status: Cambridge Housing Authority has site control. The property is currently federal public housing servicing elders and persons with disabilities.

Organization Type: Nonprofit

Potential Site: Beverly, MA

Description: New construction on a five acre industrial site in Beverly and the City is planning to zone it 40R (multi-family). We are looking at up to 60 units for families, with some reserved for homeless families. The site is about one mile from the commuter rail and downtown Beverly and about 1.5 miles to the beach.

Status: Have site control through an owner to acquire the parcel once the City rezones the area to multi-family (within the next 12 months).

Island Housing Trust

Contact: Derrill Bazzy email icon Office Phone icon 1-508-693-1117

Organization Type: Nonprofit

Potential Site: Tisbury, MA

Description: Redevelopment of a 4-acre parcel to create much needed affordable and mixed-income rental housing for year round residents. The site is located along one of the major Vineyard roadways and currently houses a warehouse, which will need to be relocated. Developer is open to a range of design and site solutions with a goal of building at least 30-40 apartments depending on unit sizes and density.

Status: Island Housing Trust will be working in partnership with current landowners to develop the property as a mixed-income development with high priority to affordable housing. We have not yet established a program, which we would hope to develop with the Student Team's input, along with initial context analysis, site planning, and building schematics.

Preservation of Affordable Housing, Inc.

Contact: Cory Mian email icon Office Phone icon 617-449-0867

Organization Type: Nonprofit

Potential Site: Framingham, MA

Description: Reuse of an historic, mixed-use building in center of Framingham, MA. The property near the commuter rail station and has the potential to create new, affordable units on upper floors with commercial/office below.

Status: No formal site control, but the owner is enthusiastic about participating.

Urban Edge Housing Corporation

Contact: Shaina Korman-Houston email icon Office Phone icon 617-989-9336

Organization Type: Nonprofit

Potential Site: Roxbury, MA

Description: Redevelopment of a .5 acre site in a residential neighborhood in Roxbury. Urban Edge has made substantial investments in the neighborhood and this site represents some of the last blighted properties to be developed. Urban Edge seeks to redevelop the site with 40 - 50 units of affordable or mixed income housing. We hope to gain valuable information and creative ideas from a student proposal.

Status: The project is in early pre-development, and limited site assessment has been conducted. However, Urban Edge intends to submit it in the next Department of Housing and Community Development funding round, so students would be working on a project likely to move forward in the near future.
