Geneva Exchange reuses a vacant lot to create 45 units of affordable housing with community amenities, including an arts center, non-profit business incubator, music studio, commercial kitchen, and a café. Proposed by the Caribbean Integration Community, Inc., team.

First place: $10,000
Second place: $6,000
Third Place: $3,000
Each award is shared equally between the student team and the developer.
What: The competition pairs teams of talented graduate students with affordable housing organizations to develop innovative and comprehensive development proposals addressing the needs of these organizations.
Who: Graduate students interested in architecture, planning, finance, and policy.
Why: Gain real-world experience, make contacts, receive credit, and help critical housing projects get off the ground.
When: The 13th annual Affordable Housing Development Competition begins February 2013.
2012 Winners:
First Place: Geneva Exchange, Dorchester, Massachusetts. A student team from Harvard and Northeastern Universities collaborated with the nonprofit Caribbean Integration Communities, Inc.
Second Place: Lyman Gardens, Holyoke, Massachusetts. A student team from the Boston Architectural College and Harvard University collaborated with the nonprofit Holyoke Neighborhood Development Corporation.
Third Place: Millicent Place, Boston, Massachusetts. A student team from Boston Architectural College, Harvard University, and MIT collaborated with the nonprofit Asian Community Development Corporation.
